Adoption records are often "sealed" records
instead of open records. This can make it particularly
difficult for a person to search free adoption records,
especially if they are not the adoptee. The original
birth certificate is replaced with a new birth certificate
following the adoption. The original birth certificate
contains the names of the original parents of the
adoptee. The original birth certificate is replaced
with a new birth certificate that shows the names
of the adoptee's adoptive parents. The new birth
certificate actually declares the adoptee as the
biological child of the adoptive parents.
Each state has its own laws regarding the opening
of sealed files. Some states also have voluntary
registries that allow adoptees and biological family
members to place their name and contact information
in the registry so that they may be able to regain
contact with each other.
