Birth Certificate Copies after Adoption or other Legal Course of Action:

By Alabama law, the State Registrar is responsible for establishing a new Alabama birth certificate after an adoption has taken place. The new Alabama birth certificate is used in place of the original Alabama birth certificate on file. The original Alabama birth certificate, paternity information and proof of adoption is place in a "sealed file" by the state of Alabama.

Original Birth Information:

The adult adoptee has the right to access amended Alabama vital records as of the year 2000. The Alabama legislature now allows the adult or other person whose original Alabama birth certificate was "sealed" to obtain a non-certified copy of their Alabama birth certificate as well as proof of adoption and other information that has been placed in a "sealed file."

Parental Preferences:

The revision of the adoption law in 2000 allows the birth parent to place information in the "sealed file" of the adoptee. They may also state their wishes in regards to being contacted regarding an Alabama adoption. They may also choose to provide medical history to the state in the event that the adoptee requires such information.
