West Virginia Adoption Records Information

West Virginia adoption records can be found by using the following instructions. West Virginia offers the option of non-identifying information to adult adoptees and adoptive parents of minor children for medical purposes. Identifying information tends to be more difficult to get a hold of for adoptees, especially youth. In most states, it is a requirement that the adoptee be an adult before sensitive information and the identities of birth parents be released. In many cases you will require a court order and be an adult in order to open your adoption files and to obtain an original birth certificate.

Adoptive parents, adopted adults, 18 or older, biological parents, and children of deceased adult adoptees may acquire non-identifying information.

Identifying information is available through the adoption registry. Both birth parents and adoptees, 18 or older, may use the registry. It is required that they attend on hour of counseling. If the adoptee is unsuccessful in obtaining identifying information, he or she may file a petition with the court to search for the birth parents to obtain consent for the release of identifying information.
