Maine Vital Records Search Information

Maine vital records are kept by selectmen and town clerks.  Many of Maine’s towns are old and have been in existence since the 1650’s, however, the majority of Maine’s vital records date back to the 1700’s.  These types of older Maine vital records, including births, deaths and marriages were recorded by the town or city where the event took place.  The quality of Maine’s vital records vary from town to town, as some records were kept more organized than others.  Some records may have also been lost due to natural disasters and fires.  Other vital records were simply stored in private residences.
