Ohio vital records are located in various locations depending on the type and the year the event took place.  Birth and death records were kept by the probate court of each Ohio county between 1867 and December 20, 1908.  These Ohio vital records are not included in the statewide index.  Certified copies of Ohio marriage licenses are available through the Probate Court in the county in which the license was issued.  Certified copies of divorce records are available through the Clerk of Common Pleas in the county where the Ohio divorce was granted.

The state office in Ohio carries vital birth records dating back to December 20 of 1908.  If you require a record earlier than 1908 contact the Probate Court in the county were the event originally occurred.  The Ohio state office carries death records for deaths were after December 31, 1936. If you require death records that are before December 20, 1908 or before December 31, 1936, you can contact the Ohio Historical Society, Archives Library Division, 1982 Belmont Ave, Columbus, OH 43211- 2497.  You can obtain index records information from 1913- 1927 on the Internet at http://www.ohiohistory.org.
